Why thoughtful packaging matters for your craft business

When a customer buys a handmade item, they are not just purchasing a product. They are buying your time, skill, and care. Good packaging protects your work, reduces damage claims, and turns delivery into a delightful experience. Poor packaging leads to broken items, negative reviews, and costly replacements. As a maker, you can wrap every order as beautifully as you make it. This guide covers choosing materials, protecting delicate pieces, and calculating postage so you can ship with confidence.

Choosing the right packaging materials

Match your packaging to your product. A ceramic bowl needs different protection from a knitted scarf or a wooden board. Consider weight, shape, and fragility.

  • Boxes: Use double-walled boxes for heavy or fragile pieces. Single-walled are fine for light textiles. Choose a box slightly larger than the item to allow cushioning.
  • Cushioning: Bubble wrap suits glass, ceramics, and resin. Eco-friendly options include recycled paper void fill, corrugated inserts, or biodegradable peanuts. Tissue paper adds charm but little protection alone.
  • Outer wrapping: Soft items like cushions can go in sturdy poly mailers. Add tissue or an inner bag to guard against moisture.
  • Tape and labels: Use strong packing tape, ideally paper tape that recycles with the box. Water-activated tape gives a professional, tamper-evident finish.

Buying in bulk saves money if you have storage. Start with a few versatile sizes.

Protecting delicate and fragile pieces

Fragile items need a strategy. The goal is to immobilise the item and absorb shock.

  • Wrap individually: Wrap each delicate piece separately. For a set of mugs, wrap each one, then place in a divided box or separate small boxes inside the larger parcel.
  • Use corner protectors: For framed art or flat wooden items, foam or cardboard corner protectors prevent dents.
  • Double box: For very fragile pieces, place the wrapped item in a small box, then inside a larger box with at least 5 cm of cushioning on all sides.
  • Test the shake: Gently shake the sealed box. If you hear movement, add more cushioning. The item should be snug and silent.
  • Consider insurance: For high-value items, pay for additional cover with your courier.

Calculating postage costs without overcharging

Postage can make or break your margin. Charge too little and you lose money; too much and customers abandon their baskets. Accuracy is key.

  • Weigh and measure: Use a digital scale in grams and a tape measure. Weigh the item plus packaging, then round up to the next weight band. For parcels, measure length, width, and height to calculate volumetric weight, as couriers charge based on the greater of actual or volumetric weight.
  • Know your zones: Domestic, European, and international rates differ. Create a table of common destinations and typical costs per weight band.
  • Decide on free shipping: Build the cost into the product price, charge a flat rate, or use real-time rates if your platform supports it.
  • Account for packaging: Add a small amount to cover boxes, tape, and labels.
  • Review regularly: Check rates every few months to avoid absorbing increases.

Labelling, presentation, and the unboxing experience

Your parcel is a physical extension of your brand. A clean, legible label with your return address is essential. Use a label printer or a clear pouch to protect the address from rain. Inside, add a handwritten thank-you note, a care card, or a small freebie. Wrap the item in tissue paper sealed with a branded sticker. This looks lovely and adds protection. For international orders, fill out customs declarations accurately and attach them securely. A missing declaration can delay your parcel for weeks.

Streamlining your packing and shipping routine

As your business grows, packing every order individually becomes overwhelming. A simple routine saves time and reduces errors.

  • Set up a packing station: Keep boxes, tape, scissors, tissue, labels, and a scale in one place.
  • Batch your orders: Pack multiple orders together twice a week instead of one by one. This is faster and reveals patterns in popular items.
  • Use a checklist: Check correct item, address, protection, customs form, and tracking number.
  • Keep records: Note weights and dimensions of standard parcels for faster future quotes.
  • Ask for feedback: If a customer reports damage, ask for a photo of the packaging to learn what went wrong.

Shipping is the final step in your creative process. With the right materials, planning, and routine, you can send your work out safely, beautifully, and profitably.
